Trump’s Ban on Transgender’s from Enlisting in the Armed Forces Has Been Placed on Hold

 

Those who decide to join the armed forces are willing to risk their lives for their country. They aren’t analyzing every race or religion of all the people they are fighting for nor are they only defending one type of individual. Those who enlist in the armed forces are representing Americans and should be respected for their bravery and commitment to their country.

Donald Trump is looking to ban anyone who considers themselves as a transgender from enlisting in the armed forces, however, the ban has been placed on hold until more information from the President is provided.

President Donald Trump, however, seems to be looking at things from a different perspective. He announced on Wednesday that transgender individuals would be banned from serving in the armed forces. So, if the only individuals who were to enlist in the armed forces were transgender, would our country be left helpless in a time of war?

It seems as though President Trump is really throwing his weight around in the White House as he and his administration continue to propose various types of bans. In June, he proposed a travel ban to be placed on individuals from various countries that identify as “mostly Muslim.” However, while he is trying to make history with his strategic chess moves he continues to make, there are some who have a level of skepticism regarding him and his administration’s actions which is why some or only a portion of his “movements” are accepted.

As of right now, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford announced that “there will be no modifications to the current policy until the president’s direction has been received by the secretary of defense and the secretary has issued implementation guidance” [Source: NBC News]. He also made a statement where he said, “In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect.” Does that mean that if this transgender ban goes into effect, equality will diminish? After all, shouldn’t we be treating everyone equally regardless of how we identify?

 

President Trump’s Ban on Transgender Individuals is Being Called a “Military Decision”

 

Naturally, there are two sides to everything. While Trump is concerned with the “medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail” others are disturbed by the fact that limiting those who want to protect and serve for our country has come down to how we identify ourselves in terms of gender. Today’s era is growing with the number of transgender individuals and when the ban first was lifted under Barack Obama, 250 service members applied to change their gender in the military personnel system.

It is illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee or potential employee based on their gender preference, but is isn’t for Donald Trump to ban a transgender from enlisting in the armed forces?

Many of those who decide to enlist in the armed forces do so without attending college. Some join right out of high school and consider their position as a job. Therefore, if Donald Trump manages to get this ban reenacted again, could we say it is a form of employment discrimination? After all, an employer can’t turn away an individual who is a male but identifies as a female and vice versa. Perhaps an employment and labor law attorney can shed light on the matter to help us better understand if what Trump is trying to do is ethical or should be against the law.

As trump’s time in office lengthens, we are learning that his actions during his campaigning may have been a front for who he truly is. NBC News shows a picture of Trump holding a rainbow flag that was given to him by supporter Max Nowak during a campaign which implies he respects those who are gay or lesbian. Perhaps Trump did this to gain the support from the LGBT community so he could become the president he is today, someone who is using gender identify to determine whether or not you can serve your country.
